Location: Orient Elementary School, Orient School District No. 065, Washington State
Reports To: Teachers / Principal / Special Education Director / Office Staff
Employment Type: Part-time / Classified Staff
Work Schedule: 2026–27 School Year | 3 hours daily | Monday–Friday

Position Summary

Orient School District is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and student-centered Custodian to
help maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and orderly learning environment for students, staff,
families, and community members. The ideal candidate understands the importance of creating
spaces where students can feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

This position performs routine custodial duties and supports the daily operations of the school
through cleaning, maintenance support, setup for school activities, and attention to health and
safety standards. Successful candidates will work collaboratively with staff, demonstrate
professionalism and reliability, and contribute positively to the culture of a small rural school
community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and common areas
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and sanitize surfaces
  • Empty trash and recycling and properly dispose of waste
  • Refill supplies including soap, sanitizer, and paper products
  • Clean windows, doors, fixtures, furniture, and equipment
  • Assist with setup and takedown for school events, activities, meetings, and lunches
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety throughout the school day and respond promptly to spills
    or messes
  • Operate custodial equipment and basic hand tools safely and appropriately
  • Follow all district safety procedures and chemical handling protocols
  • Monitor building conditions and report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or
    vandalism
  • Support a positive and respectful school environment through professional interactions
    with students and staff
  • Work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by administration

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform routine custodial and cleaning duties
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work effectively in a school environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Successful completion of Washington State background check and fingerprinting
    requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous custodial or cleaning experience
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning methods, equipment, and safety procedures
  • Experience working in a school or public facility
  • Experience working in a small rural school setting
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff

Physical and Working Conditions

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and typical school environment conditions
