Paraeducator

Location: Orient Elementary School, Orient School District No. 065, Washington State
Reports To: Teachers / Principal / Special Education Director / Office Staff
Employment Type: Part-time / Classified Staff
Work Schedule: 2026–27 School Year | 3 hours daily | Monday–Friday

Position Summary

Orient School District is seeking a caring, dependable, and student-centered Paraeducator to
support students academically, socially, and emotionally in a small rural school environment.
The ideal candidate believes that strong relationships, patience, consistency, and compassion are
essential to student success and understands the importance of viewing education through a
trauma-informed lens.

The Paraeducator works under the supervision of certificated staff to assist with instructional
activities, student support, classroom organization, and behavior support. This position involves
working directly with students individually, in small groups, and within the classroom setting to
reinforce learning, encourage positive behavior, and help create a safe and inclusive school
culture.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers with instructional activities aligned to lesson plans
  • Provide academic support to individual students and small groups
  • Support students with special education needs, accommodations, or behavior plans as
    assigned
  • Assist with classroom management and student supervision
  • Monitor and document student progress and behavior as directed
  • Prepare instructional materials and classroom resources
  • Support student independence, self-regulation, and social-emotional development
  • Supervise students during recess, lunch, transitions, and other non-instructional times
  • Use positive behavior supports and trauma-informed practices
  • Build positive, respectful relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Maintain student confidentiality in compliance with FERPA
  • Follow district policies, safety procedures, and ethical standards
  • Successfully complete required district and state trainings
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and learning needs
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, patience, and flexibility in a school environment
  • Successful completion of Washington State background check and fingerprinting
    requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Paraeducator Certificate issued by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public
    Instruction (OSPI)
  • Experience working with children or youth in an educational setting
  • Coursework or training in education, child development, trauma-informed practices, or
    related fields
  • Experience supporting students with disabilities or special needs
  • Familiarity with social-emotional learning and positive behavior support systems

Physical and Working Conditions

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the school day
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • May require assisting students with mobility or personal care depending on assignment
  • Work performed in classrooms and other school environments

Terms of Employment

  • Salary: Based on experience
  • Contract Length: Annual | 2026–27 School Year
